Most Internet of Things (IoT) definitions have hovered around the convergence of Information Technology (IT) and Operations Technology (OT). While this is a good characterization, IoT is not just about IT and OT merging. IoT is also not just about machines becoming smarter. In future, we will see IoT shifting focus to completely and digitally transforming people’s lives at home and in business. And that transformation will be enabled by new edge and cloud applications, advanced digital user interaction, data analytics, Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven actions. Humans will find new ways to control machines and machines will get smarter and respond much promptly, accurately and automatically than ever before. We all know that university minds are the best – there is creativity, passion, dedication and hard work that drives the brightest interns. And when such skills are applied in cutting-edge areas such as Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), you can expect strong results. At Dihuni, we are proud to have a strong contingent of graduate interns from reputed schools such as Robert H Smith School of Business, University of Maryland and George Washington University, Washington DC applying their skills and learning about real world business applications of IoT and other new areas. IDC released two market reports within the past ten days. The first was their WorldWide Quarterly Server Tracker reporting Q1 market results. The second report was released yesterday as an update to the Worldwide Semiannual Internet of Things Spending Guide which forecasts worldwide spending on the Internet of Things (IoT). Both reports are significant to Digital Transformation and I personally feel we have promising news for Dihuni. Below are some of the highlights of the reports that are impactful from a digital standpoint. Congratulations to Mark Zuckerberg on receiving an honorary degree from Harvard University today recognizing his unparalleled contribution to technology and the world! With almost 2 billion users, Mark has probably gone beyond what he initially thought when he embarked on an idea of using the internet to connect people, not just computers. I was particularly struck with his graduation speech in a video feed tweeted by CBS where Mark said, “Ideas don’t come out fully formed..they only become clear when you work on them…you just have to get started”. At the 2017 IoT World Forum yesterday, Cisco said 60% of IoT projects fail in infancy/Proof of Concept (POC) stage and only 26% actually get completed. While this may sound alarming, it doesn’t surprise me much as I remember in the early days of cloud computing, we saw similar adoption trends. And these numbers may not be so bad considering IoT is even more complex than what cloud computing was in the early stages. Cloud was mostly about doing stuff that you would normally do but on someone else’s computer which is remote from you. It was disruptive but to an extent cloud was a shift from one computing model to another and arguably a more efficient model.
