Server Systems Management

Supermicro Server Manager (SSM) provides capabilities to monitor the health of server components including memory, hard drives and RAID controllers. It enables the datacenter administrator to monitor and manage power usage across all Supermicro servers allowing users to maximize their CPU payload while mitigating the risk of tripped circuit. Firmware upgrades on Supermicro servers became easier now with a couple of clicks. Administrators can now mount an ISO image on multiple servers and reboot the servers with those images. The tool also provides pre-defined reports and many more features that will make managing Supermicro servers simpler. I’m using it to replace my home linux development, virtualization (KVM), media (Plex), and storage (ZFS on SAS) server which runs on a SuperMicro A1SRI-2758F based system. It has been feeling its age, especially when I kick off applications that want to eat all the available system memory.

The new box should easily be able to accept the SAS controller and external arrays that the old system currently does, and operate them better. More memory support in the box means I can stop playing the game of shutting daemons down when I need to do big voodoo, AND I’ll be able to give ZFS that 32G of ram it really wants. I’m also rather interested in exploring what I can do with the QAT that comes on the SoC package; there have been some heavy strides supporting it in OpenSSL and ZFS on Linux.
